Its Ragging or Waht??? Share

Hmmmm……Ragging!!!!!!!! It’s a masti time between seniors and newcomers parjab yeh serious ho  jata hai na to bas!!!!! Basically ragging kya hota hai?????? It’s just enjoying few days of your college and development of cordial and friendly relations among bachchas and their seniors but in many places this all full too masti and jokes take the form of  mental, physical and sexual abuses. The juniors are usually too frightened to resist their organised group of tormentors. The torture on innocent students often run for months, and involve the same batch of students being physically and mentally abused by same and/or different group of seniors (including those from the opposite sex) over and over again. Anti Ragging Organization, SAVE, stated in a recent publication that in some institutions it has been reportedly turned into a tool for extorting money from the juniors. Ragging is different from other crimes because the motive is solely to get perverse pleasure.

With the increasing privatisation of higher education in India, academic institutions in India have been experiencing increasing ragging-related excesses. A report from 2007 highlights 42 instances of physical injury, and reports on ten deaths purportedly the result of ragging. In many colleges, like IIT Bombay and IIT Hyderabad, ragging has benn strictly banned. However, this ban has not been very effective, as seen by the number of ragging cases still reported by the media. In present day India, ragging involves gross violations of basic human rights. The seniors are known to torture juniors and by this those seniors get some kind of sadistic pleasures. Truly speaking the nature of ragging in most of the hostels in India, may be as severe as what we know about the in famous Abu Ghraib prison of Iraq. And can you believe this incident that a student was asked to bath in his own urine!!!!!!!!!!!! Weired na matlab its ragging aur what??????????? Bachche itne craze se aate hai that they will enjoy their opening days, that’s ok but bache ki jaan to mat lo yaar!!!!!!!!!!

Discrimination based on caste, region, language, class etc plays a vital role in influencing it, especially in small cities and towns. Ragging is used as a measuring rod to test the courage of the seniors. Many seniors who are reluctant to rag, finally succumb to peer pressure. Many seniors rag just to stay in their group of friends. In many instances it starts as a healthy interaction but due to adrenaline rush and excitement in the group the seniors get carried away and ragging turns ugly. Students consider ragging as an old ritual having social acceptance.

But hamein ye social evil ( vaise it’s not but we have created it) remove karna chahiye!!!!!!!! So here are some steps!!!!!!!!!!!!1

There should be more accountability of the college staff  in case of any ragging incident. Surprise checks by the hostel warden especially during the nights toh hone hi chahiye. System of ragging complaint should be made friendlier and safer for the freshers. Faculty members should stay in close contact with the freshers and instill in them a sense of confidence. Create a massive nationwide awareness about ragging. In an event of severe ragging, victim must be given an option to change the college.Efforts to be made to make ragging a social evil, by highlighting its ill-effects and thus establish a public opinion against it. Alternative methods of interactions eg. Dramas, community work, adventurous sports, short trips, evening games and gathering. In the presence of hostel warden, Dance, Competitions, name game
