DCE Upgraded to DTU

Example frontpage imageDelhi Assembly unanimously passed a Bill on July 01, 2009 paving way for upgradation of Delhi College of Engineering to Delhi Technological University. Upgradation of the engineering college will open up new opportunities for expansion of technical education in Delhi as more courses are introduced as now it will be an autonomous university. New BE programmes in software engineering, automotive engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, engineering physics, aerospace engineering, medical engineering and nuclear science and engineering will be introduced soon. Courses on bio-technology, nano-technology, bio-informatics, computational mathematics and MBA in knowledge and technology management and information systems management would also be introduced.

Several mails received from alumni & students have expressed their gratitude to the Hon’ble CM Delhi for this historic decision to upgrade a premier institution like DCE into a technical University. Some of these mails are reproduced below

Honorable Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dixit,
It is with great pride that I am writing to you regarding my dear Alma Mater.
I am a graduate of Delhi Polytechnic (Class of 1959) the predecessor to the Delhi college of Engineering. And so are my three Brothers Lokesh (Class of 1959),Yogi( Class of 1969 and currently Chaired Professor ofMechanical Engg at USF,Florida,USA),Tushar (Class of 1977) and one of my brother in laws Jitendra Sharma (Class of 1972). We as a family have received great education in engineering and we all proud of it.Delhi College of Engineering stands out among colleges and universities offering engineering curricula and is respected and recognised all over the world. It has gained reputation not only that it has produced scholars and entrepreneurs but excellent engineers. Its product ( the graduates) have brought glory to it by being among Commonwealth Scholars,Nuclear Engineers(among the first ones in the 50's who were responsible for the commissioning of the very first heavy water plant in India and fusion research and the start up of the nuclear power plants),members of the railway board ,distinguished academicians and inventors). The Class of 1959 ( most of our members have retired) just celebrated its 50th Reunion at DCE and Endowed a Rs Ten Lakh Scholarship Fund for Students which shows how much regard and trust we put in the faculty and the academic programs. The other Alumni are also coming forward to support the activities at DCE. We feel that DCE deserves the status of a university which will allow administration to have independence in hiring world class faculty and forge cooperative relationships in research, student and faculty exchange with universities around the world.I am aware that your administration is proposing to introduce a bill in the Delhi Assembly to grant the status of a university to DCE. I will be remiss if I did not say that a lot has happened under the leadership of the current Director Professor P.B.Sharma who was also the organizer of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Delhi Polytechnic in 1991 at the Old Campus at Kashmiri Gate. Let me thank you again for the foresight that you personally and your administration have shown in advancing this task.
With Best Wishes and Kind Regards,
Yours Sincerely,

Honorable Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dixit,
It is with great pride that I am writing to you regarding my dear Alma Mater. I am a graduate of Delhi College of Engineering (Class of 1969). I have a lot of exceptional graduates from Delhi College of Engineering employed by my companies in both India and USA. I truly believe myself and my associates who graduated from DCE received very good education at the institution.Delhi College of Engineering stands out among colleges and universities offering engineering curricula and is respected and recognised all over the world. More recently the students at DCE are getting good recognition with the research and projects they are doing in the area of alternate energy sources and in UAV’s for both defense and commercial applications.

Dear Hon'ble Chief Minister Sheila Dixit Ji :
Upgradation of Delhi College of Engineering(DCE) to Delhi Technological University
(DTU) is a monumental decision for which the credit goes to you. Please accept my heartiest congratulations. There is little doubt that you will be rememberd for generations for this far -sighted step to get DCE out of the clutches of Delhi University (DU) and the UPSC. DU strangulated DCE by not allowing the updating of the academic programmes over many years and showed no concern for hiring any decent faculty on time for years. Being a well wisher of DCE, I have been urging Prof P B Sharma, the Principal of DCE, for years to pursue with you vigorously the goal of achieving autonomy for the institution. Now that the persistence of Prof Sharma has been fruitful, it is my sincere hope that the new governance and mangement system of the University based on autonomy with accountability will help DTU reach much higher heights in the academic sphere, as also in serving the Knowledge Economy of the country. Thus, the dream of Pandit Jwahar Lal Nehru to convert DCE to an IIT will ultimately be fulfilled.
Best wishes

Sir,
I would like to congratulate you for the fact that dce has rightly been raised to the staus of a university which it rightly deserves and this opens up a plethora of options. Though the existing students continue to be governed by the same curriculum, yet it has long been realised that it is not up to date and lacks in certain respects. It will indeed be very difficult to merge the existing students into a new curriculum as it poses a lot of administrative and intellectual challenges However, I would like to suggest that to bring the existing students on to a global competitive level , the college introduce some new add on courses for them which completes the missing dimension to their curriculum. These course such as industrial robotics, intelligent machines, microcontroller/microprocessor applications for mechanical and production engg. students.Though these might sound as courses generally offered at master level but the world over these are offered to undergraduates in form of introductory courses. Similarly other courses might be added to other depts. in order to raise standards by introducing computational methods for undergraduate students. If it might be difficult to get approval from the university, then these might be introduced for existing students by DTU not for the purpose of examination but for the sheer benefit of students and raise their standards. These might also be added as courses with a single credit to not affect the pattern of university. I hope that while taking any decision regarding DTU and discussing the future prospects of the university the above mentioned request will be thoughtfully debated and implemented in a rightful manner to realise the ever changing and interdisciplinary nature of engineering. Rather this will help in making DTU engg. courses to be pandisciplinary.
expressing my regards,
Yours obediently
